Working on trees behind Casuarina Beach

Casuarina grew up on the sand behind Casuarina Beach, and the trees still show it. Coastal banksia and she-oak stand along the dune edge, pandanus grows near the beach access tracks, and tuckeroo turns up in the gardens. Most of our work sits in back yards and along side fences, off Casuarina Way and the streets that branch from it. A banksia that has grown wide over a pool fence, or a she-oak dropping needles and cones onto a roof, is a typical call from this end of the Tweed Coast.

Access is mostly easy, because the streets are wide and the blocks were laid out with driveways and kerbs in place. The tighter part is inside the block. Side gates can be narrow, back yards often hold a pool, a deck or a retaining wall, and a ground crew has to carry cut timber around all of it. Roadside trees belong to Tweed Shire Council, and trees on the dune and beach reserve side are council or crown land, so check before touching anything that is not clearly on your own title.

The housing here is newer than most of the Tweed Coast, built in stages from the shoreline back, with modern homes on blocks that are on the small side. Young trees planted close to a boundary have often grown into the fence, the neighbour's roof line or the paving by now. The ground is sandy, so a tree in a sustained blow can lean or lift a root plate rather than snap, and salt on the wind keeps shaping canopies toward the land. That drives most of the pruning and removal decisions.

What we do here most

What Casuarina yards keep needing

Trees planted close to fences, pools and paving a few years back are now big enough to push on all three.

Root Removal

Roots lifting pavers around a Casuarina pool

A she-oak or a fast-growing street-side tree can send roots under pool paving and into the garden edging within a few years. We cut back the roots that are lifting the surface, and where the tree is coming out we follow the main roots to the point they can be taken out. In sand the roots run shallow and wide, which helps with access but means a lot of digging near the pool shell.

Tree Trimming

Banksia branches growing over a back fence

Coastal banksia grows wide and low, and in a small estate block that means branches over the neighbour's fence and onto the roof. We trim back to the boundary line, take off the dead wood that salt and wind have killed, and lift the lower canopy so the lawn gets light. The cuttings go through the chipper in the driveway.

Palm Tree Removal

A tall palm too close to the house

Palms planted near a verandah or a pool in the early years can end up with a crown level with the roofline. A climber works from the top down, taking fronds and then the trunk in sections that are lowered on a rope, because there is little room to drop them. The stump is cut low, and the cut lengths are carried out through the side gate.

Commercial Tree Services

Trees around apartments and car parks near the town centre

Strata complexes and commercial premises near the Casuarina shops have car parks, walkways and shared garden beds with trees right beside them. The work is planned around people using the space: a section of walkway closed, vehicles moved, and the drop zone marked off. Overhanging limbs come off the carpark side first, and chipping is done on site.

If it is urgent

If a limb comes down on a Casuarina fence or pool

  1. 1Keep people and pets inside and well back from the fallen limb, and look at the tree from a distance rather than going under it.
  2. 2Do not climb the tree, do not cut a limb that is bent or pinned under tension, and stay clear of anything touching a power line.
  3. 3When you ring, tell us the street, whether the tree is in the front or back yard, and what it has landed on, such as the fence, pool, roof or car.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which areas do you cover?

Tweed Heads, the Tweed Coast, Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley, and the southern Gold Coast as far as Palm Beach and Tallebudgera. Each place has its own page on the service areas page. If yours is not listed, ask, because the list is where we work most often rather than a boundary.

Do you work in Queensland as well as New South Wales?

Yes. The work crosses the border at Tweed Heads and Coolangatta and carries on through Gold Coast suburbs such as Currumbin, Elanora and Bilinga. Which council a tree falls under changes with the side of the border, and that can change what you need to check before a tree comes down.

Which tree jobs do you do?

Trimming, pruning, tree and limb removal, stump grinding, root removal, chipping and mulching, palm tree removal, land clearing and fire breaks, arborist services, commercial tree work, crane-assisted removal and emergency tree work. Each job has its own page on the services page.

Do you do emergency tree work?

Yes. Emergency tree service is one of the jobs on the services page. We are open 24 hours a day, Monday to Saturday, and closed on Sundays. Ring 0458 795 659, say what has come down and what it is lying on, and keep everyone well back until we have spoken.

What is the difference between pruning and lopping?

Pruning takes a branch off at the branch collar, the swelling where it joins the trunk, so the tree can seal the wound. Lopping cuts through a branch anywhere along its length and tends to leave a stub that decays. Pruning is the method for a tree that is staying.

What happens to the branches and the mulch?

Branches and leaves are put through a commercial chipper on site. You can keep the mulch for your garden beds or have it taken away, whichever suits the block.

How far down is a stump ground?

Below ground level, so the spot can go back to lawn, paving or a new planting. Roots are taken out as well when they need to be, and the chips and debris are dealt with as part of the job.

How often do palm trees need cleaning?

Once or twice a year is usual. The job is taking off the dead brown fronds, seed pods and berries that would otherwise land on paths, cars and people.

Do I need council permission to remove a tree?

Often you do, and it varies. Tree preservation rules depend on the council, the zoning, the size of the tree and whether it is a native or protected species. Check with your council before a large or protected tree comes down.

What is crane-assisted tree removal?

A crane takes the weight of each section while a climber makes the cuts, then lifts it clear. It is used for trees that are large, dangerous or too hard to reach any other way, such as ones standing over a house or close to power lines.

What should I tell you when I call?

Where the tree is, roughly how tall it is, what it stands near, such as a roof, fence, pool or wire, and whether it is leaning or has split. A photo taken from a safe distance helps. Say whether a truck can reach the back yard too.

What should I do if a tree or limb is touching a power line?

Stay well back, keep people and pets away, and do not touch the tree or anything it is touching. Treat the line as live and ring 000 if anyone is at risk. Once everyone is clear, ring the number at the top of this page and tell us what is touching what.

Local, and on the phone

Tree work in Casuarina

Send us the street, the tree and what it stands next to, whether that is a pool, a fence or a roof. If you can tell us whether there is a side gate wide enough for a wheelie bin, we can plan the access.
