Working on trees from the Kingscliff foreshore inland

Kingscliff stretches along Marine Parade and the beach, and the foreshore trees set the look of the place. Norfolk Island pines and pandanus stand near the sand, paperbarks line the edges of Cudgen Creek, and Turnock Street runs back from the sea through the middle of town. Behind the streets the land flattens into cane country. Our calls come from all of it: a pine dropping heavy cones and dead branches over a roof, a paperbark leaning on a creek-side fence, or a garden tree outgrowing a cottage block.

Access changes a lot from one end of town to the other. Streets near the foreshore are busy, with holiday parking and little room to set up a truck, so a work vehicle may need to park a few doors down and carry equipment in. Further back the blocks are wider and driveways are easier. Trees on the road verge and in the foreshore reserves are Tweed Shire Council's, and anything beside Cudgen Creek can have extra rules, so check with council before taking out a large or protected tree.

Kingscliff has older fibro and weatherboard cottages, low-set brick homes from later decades, holiday apartments near the beach and newer estates to the west towards the Pacific Highway. Much of the town sits low and flat, so it floods when the creek and rain arrive together, and saturated ground makes big trees less stable. Salt wind burns the seaward side of canopies and leaves lopsided crowns, and that unevenness is what a climber checks before any cut is made.

What we do here most

What Kingscliff keeps calling about

Tall trees on the foreshore and creek edge sit close to roofs, apartments and wires, so the question is usually how to get the weight down safely.

Emergency Tree Service

A storm limb across a side street near Marine Parade

Summer storms bring down dead wood from pines and paperbarks, and a limb can block a driveway or rest on a parked car. We look first for anything touching a wire, then cut the limb into pieces small enough to move by hand. Because parking is tight near the beach, the pieces are carried to the truck instead of dropped into the street.

Crane-Assisted Tree Removal

A tall pine standing between two buildings

A tall Norfolk Island pine with a house on one side and a unit block on the other leaves nowhere to drop timber. A crane takes the weight while a climber makes each cut at height, and the section swings clear to a landing area. It suits Kingscliff because streets are narrow near the beach and no cut piece can be allowed to fall.

Stump Grinding

Grinding a cottage-garden stump on a flat Kingscliff block

After a camphor or a fig comes out of an older cottage yard, the stump sits in the middle of a flat lawn. The grinder is walked in through the side path and works down below the soil line, and the chips are raked into the garden or loaded for removal. Before grinding starts we check the ground for pipes and cables.

Tree Pruning

Lifting salt-burnt paperbark over a creek-side fence

Paperbarks along Cudgen Creek and the drains behind town grow lopsided from salt wind and from leaning toward the water. We cut back to the branch collar, taking out the dead and crossing wood and reducing the end weight that pulls the limb down toward the fence. The aim is a canopy that sheds wind instead of snapping in it.

If it is urgent

If a branch comes down in Kingscliff

  1. 1Keep everyone clear of the fallen branch and the tree above it, and view the damage from the footpath or a window instead of walking underneath.
  2. 2Do not climb up to clear it, do not cut anything that is bent or caught under strain, and stay well away from any wire it is touching.
  3. 3Tell us which street you are on, how far the tree is from the foreshore or creek, and whether the branch is blocking a driveway or resting on a building.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which areas do you cover?

Tweed Heads, the Tweed Coast, Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley, and the southern Gold Coast as far as Palm Beach and Tallebudgera. Each place has its own page on the service areas page. If yours is not listed, ask, because the list is where we work most often rather than a boundary.

Do you work in Queensland as well as New South Wales?

Yes. The work crosses the border at Tweed Heads and Coolangatta and carries on through Gold Coast suburbs such as Currumbin, Elanora and Bilinga. Which council a tree falls under changes with the side of the border, and that can change what you need to check before a tree comes down.

Which tree jobs do you do?

Trimming, pruning, tree and limb removal, stump grinding, root removal, chipping and mulching, palm tree removal, land clearing and fire breaks, arborist services, commercial tree work, crane-assisted removal and emergency tree work. Each job has its own page on the services page.

Do you do emergency tree work?

Yes. Emergency tree service is one of the jobs on the services page. We are open 24 hours a day, Monday to Saturday, and closed on Sundays. Ring 0458 795 659, say what has come down and what it is lying on, and keep everyone well back until we have spoken.

What is the difference between pruning and lopping?

Pruning takes a branch off at the branch collar, the swelling where it joins the trunk, so the tree can seal the wound. Lopping cuts through a branch anywhere along its length and tends to leave a stub that decays. Pruning is the method for a tree that is staying.

What happens to the branches and the mulch?

Branches and leaves are put through a commercial chipper on site. You can keep the mulch for your garden beds or have it taken away, whichever suits the block.

How far down is a stump ground?

Below ground level, so the spot can go back to lawn, paving or a new planting. Roots are taken out as well when they need to be, and the chips and debris are dealt with as part of the job.

How often do palm trees need cleaning?

Once or twice a year is usual. The job is taking off the dead brown fronds, seed pods and berries that would otherwise land on paths, cars and people.

Do I need council permission to remove a tree?

Often you do, and it varies. Tree preservation rules depend on the council, the zoning, the size of the tree and whether it is a native or protected species. Check with your council before a large or protected tree comes down.

What is crane-assisted tree removal?

A crane takes the weight of each section while a climber makes the cuts, then lifts it clear. It is used for trees that are large, dangerous or too hard to reach any other way, such as ones standing over a house or close to power lines.

What should I tell you when I call?

Where the tree is, roughly how tall it is, what it stands near, such as a roof, fence, pool or wire, and whether it is leaning or has split. A photo taken from a safe distance helps. Say whether a truck can reach the back yard too.

What should I do if a tree or limb is touching a power line?

Stay well back, keep people and pets away, and do not touch the tree or anything it is touching. Treat the line as live and ring 000 if anyone is at risk. Once everyone is clear, ring the number at the top of this page and tell us what is touching what.

Tell us the street and what the tree is next to, such as a house, an apartment block, a fence or a wire. A note on where a truck could park helps us plan the work around that.
