Arborist in Currumbin, QLD
Working on trees from Currumbin Rock to the hillside
Currumbin is where Currumbin Creek meets the sea, with the Gold Coast Highway running past and Currumbin Rock sitting at the creek mouth. The trees here change with the ground. Down near the beach and the creek foreshore there are palms, banksias and wind-trimmed coastal trees. Further up the hill, the streets climb past gardens of older gums and ferny shade trees, looking out over the creek and the water. We are often asked to work on trees that block a view but also hold up a bank.
Access gets difficult quickly. Hillside streets are narrow, driveways drop steeply from the road, and many yards are stepped with retaining walls, so there may be no flat ground to work from. Trucks may have to park on the road, and branches are often carried down or lifted out over the house instead of dragged. Council rules can apply to certain trees, so it is worth checking with the City of Gold Coast before a large or protected one comes down. Some hill blocks need a crane to take a tree clear of the roof.
The housing is a mix of old beach cottages, split level homes from past decades and newer houses built to catch the outlook. Blocks are steep, soil sits on slope, and the wind that comes off the water hits the trees on the ridge hardest. Creek-side blocks sit lower and can be damp. For the tree work this means we look at the slope, the wall below and the root system before deciding where a cut section can fall.
What we do here most
What Currumbin hillsides and foreshores keep needing
On a steep block a tree is rarely just a tree, it is also a view, a bank and a wind break all at once.
Tree Trimming
A view blocked by a tall hillside tree
A mature tree on a hillside lot can grow until it fills the window and shades the deck. We thin the crown and lift the lower branches, so the view opens without taking the whole tree and leaving the bank exposed. Cut branches are roped down or carried to the road because there is usually no flat spot to drop them.
Crane-Assisted Tree Removal
A large tree above a roof on a slope
When a tree towers over a house on a steep block and there is no flat ground to drop sections, a crane takes the weight. A climber cuts from the tree and each piece is lifted clear over the roof and set down in the street or the drive. It keeps heavy timber off the slope and the retaining wall below.
Tree Chipping and Mulching
Branches from a hillside job turned to mulch
After a trim or removal on a sloping block, there is often a large pile of branches and no easy way to cart it off. The chipper sits on the driveway and the crew feeds it from the garden. You can keep the mulch for the beds, which also helps hold soil on a slope, or have it hauled away.
Arborist Services
Checking an old tree near a creek bank
Trees close to the creek edge can lean, lift at the base or carry dead wood high in the crown. An arborist looks at the trunk, the roots and how the ground has moved, then says whether it needs pruning, support or removal. That check is also useful before any work on a tree that council rules may cover.
If it is urgent
If a branch comes down across your Currumbin driveway
- 1Keep people and pets clear of the fallen branch and look at the tree from a safe distance, particularly on a slope where more could slide.
- 2Do not climb the tree, do not cut anything that is bent or held under tension, and stay well back from any wire it touches.
- 3When you ring, tell us the street, how steep the drive is, and whether the tree is above or below the house.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Which areas do you cover?
Tweed Heads, the Tweed Coast, Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley, and the southern Gold Coast as far as Palm Beach and Tallebudgera. Each place has its own page on the service areas page. If yours is not listed, ask, because the list is where we work most often rather than a boundary.
Do you work in Queensland as well as New South Wales?
Yes. The work crosses the border at Tweed Heads and Coolangatta and carries on through Gold Coast suburbs such as Currumbin, Elanora and Bilinga. Which council a tree falls under changes with the side of the border, and that can change what you need to check before a tree comes down.
Which tree jobs do you do?
Trimming, pruning, tree and limb removal, stump grinding, root removal, chipping and mulching, palm tree removal, land clearing and fire breaks, arborist services, commercial tree work, crane-assisted removal and emergency tree work. Each job has its own page on the services page.
Do you do emergency tree work?
Yes. Emergency tree service is one of the jobs on the services page. We are open 24 hours a day, Monday to Saturday, and closed on Sundays. Ring 0458 795 659, say what has come down and what it is lying on, and keep everyone well back until we have spoken.
What is the difference between pruning and lopping?
Pruning takes a branch off at the branch collar, the swelling where it joins the trunk, so the tree can seal the wound. Lopping cuts through a branch anywhere along its length and tends to leave a stub that decays. Pruning is the method for a tree that is staying.
What happens to the branches and the mulch?
Branches and leaves are put through a commercial chipper on site. You can keep the mulch for your garden beds or have it taken away, whichever suits the block.
How far down is a stump ground?
Below ground level, so the spot can go back to lawn, paving or a new planting. Roots are taken out as well when they need to be, and the chips and debris are dealt with as part of the job.
How often do palm trees need cleaning?
Once or twice a year is usual. The job is taking off the dead brown fronds, seed pods and berries that would otherwise land on paths, cars and people.
Do I need council permission to remove a tree?
Often you do, and it varies. Tree preservation rules depend on the council, the zoning, the size of the tree and whether it is a native or protected species. Check with your council before a large or protected tree comes down.
What is crane-assisted tree removal?
A crane takes the weight of each section while a climber makes the cuts, then lifts it clear. It is used for trees that are large, dangerous or too hard to reach any other way, such as ones standing over a house or close to power lines.
What should I tell you when I call?
Where the tree is, roughly how tall it is, what it stands near, such as a roof, fence, pool or wire, and whether it is leaning or has split. A photo taken from a safe distance helps. Say whether a truck can reach the back yard too.
What should I do if a tree or limb is touching a power line?
Stay well back, keep people and pets away, and do not touch the tree or anything it is touching. Treat the line as live and ring 000 if anyone is at risk. Once everyone is clear, ring the number at the top of this page and tell us what is touching what.
