Arborist in Coolangatta, QLD
Working on trees from Greenmount Hill to Kirra
Coolangatta tree work stretches from the headland at Point Danger and Snapper Rocks down past Rainbow Bay and Greenmount to Kirra. On the hill, old cottages sit on steep blocks with trees that have outgrown the yard, and from the top a canopy can be level with a neighbour's balcony. Down on Marine Parade and around Griffith Street, the trees are fewer but larger, standing in narrow strips beside units, cafes and car parks. A tree here is nearly always hemmed in by something, a roof, a wall, a boundary or a street.
Getting to the tree is half of the planning. Streets on Greenmount Hill are steep and narrow with cars parked on both sides, and some cottages are reached by a set of steps with no drive at all. In the town centre, trucks and the chipper must fit between parked cars and holiday traffic. Coolangatta sits against the border with Tweed Heads, but the trees on this side fall under the City of Gold Coast, not Tweed Shire. Rules vary with the tree, the land and its size, so check before a big one comes down.
Housing is a layer of old timber and fibro cottages, mid-century unit blocks and newer high-rise holiday apartments, so one street can hold all three. Small yards and shared body corporate gardens are common, and the lot lines are tight. Salt air burns the exposed side of trees and wind off the sea works on them every season. Palms, figs and pandanus have been in the gardens for a long time, and their roots and fronds reach well past where they were first planted.
What we do here most
What steep, crowded streets keep needing
Every job in Coolangatta is a puzzle about space, whether that is room to stand, room to swing a limb or room to set the machinery down.
Tree Trimming
Branches rubbing a cottage roof on Greenmount Hill
On the hill an old tree can grow right over a cottage roof, dropping leaves into the gutters and scraping the iron in a southerly. A climber works from inside the tree, shortening the branches that reach the roof and lowering each piece on a rope. Steep access means the pieces are often carried down the steps to the kerb.
Crane-Assisted Tree Removal
A large tree trapped between two unit blocks
A tall tree squeezed between two units has no clear fall line, and every section would land on a roof or a car. A crane holds the load while a climber makes the cuts, and the sections are lifted up and over the buildings to the street. The crane needs a stable spot on the road, so the street is checked first.
Stump Grinding
A stump in a narrow side passage
After a tree comes out of a narrow side passage, the stump is left where a full-size grinder cannot reach. A smaller machine is walked in, sometimes through a gate or up a few steps, and the stump is ground to below ground level. The chips are raked out and carried to the street.
Commercial Tree Services
Palms and figs in a shopfront and strata garden
Along the main strip and around the apartment blocks, palms, figs and street trees overhang awnings, signs, entrances and car parks. We prune back what is in the way, take off dead fronds and remove what is no longer safe. Work is planned around the entrances and parking so people can still walk in and out.
If it is urgent
If a limb comes down across a driveway in Coolangatta
- 1Keep people, pets and cars well clear of the limb, and look at it from the footpath or from inside your gate.
- 2Do not climb the tree, do not cut a limb that is bent or caught under tension, and do not go near a limb touching a wire.
- 3When you ring, tell us the street, whether you are on the hill or down near the beach, and what the limb has landed on or is leaning against.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Which areas do you cover?
Tweed Heads, the Tweed Coast, Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley, and the southern Gold Coast as far as Palm Beach and Tallebudgera. Each place has its own page on the service areas page. If yours is not listed, ask, because the list is where we work most often rather than a boundary.
Do you work in Queensland as well as New South Wales?
Yes. The work crosses the border at Tweed Heads and Coolangatta and carries on through Gold Coast suburbs such as Currumbin, Elanora and Bilinga. Which council a tree falls under changes with the side of the border, and that can change what you need to check before a tree comes down.
Which tree jobs do you do?
Trimming, pruning, tree and limb removal, stump grinding, root removal, chipping and mulching, palm tree removal, land clearing and fire breaks, arborist services, commercial tree work, crane-assisted removal and emergency tree work. Each job has its own page on the services page.
Do you do emergency tree work?
Yes. Emergency tree service is one of the jobs on the services page. We are open 24 hours a day, Monday to Saturday, and closed on Sundays. Ring 0458 795 659, say what has come down and what it is lying on, and keep everyone well back until we have spoken.
What is the difference between pruning and lopping?
Pruning takes a branch off at the branch collar, the swelling where it joins the trunk, so the tree can seal the wound. Lopping cuts through a branch anywhere along its length and tends to leave a stub that decays. Pruning is the method for a tree that is staying.
What happens to the branches and the mulch?
Branches and leaves are put through a commercial chipper on site. You can keep the mulch for your garden beds or have it taken away, whichever suits the block.
How far down is a stump ground?
Below ground level, so the spot can go back to lawn, paving or a new planting. Roots are taken out as well when they need to be, and the chips and debris are dealt with as part of the job.
How often do palm trees need cleaning?
Once or twice a year is usual. The job is taking off the dead brown fronds, seed pods and berries that would otherwise land on paths, cars and people.
Do I need council permission to remove a tree?
Often you do, and it varies. Tree preservation rules depend on the council, the zoning, the size of the tree and whether it is a native or protected species. Check with your council before a large or protected tree comes down.
What is crane-assisted tree removal?
A crane takes the weight of each section while a climber makes the cuts, then lifts it clear. It is used for trees that are large, dangerous or too hard to reach any other way, such as ones standing over a house or close to power lines.
What should I tell you when I call?
Where the tree is, roughly how tall it is, what it stands near, such as a roof, fence, pool or wire, and whether it is leaning or has split. A photo taken from a safe distance helps. Say whether a truck can reach the back yard too.
What should I do if a tree or limb is touching a power line?
Stay well back, keep people and pets away, and do not touch the tree or anything it is touching. Treat the line as live and ring 000 if anyone is at risk. Once everyone is clear, ring the number at the top of this page and tell us what is touching what.
